Christmas Elves – German Families Invite You to Join the Festivities

Christmas is a time for celebration, for getting together, and for spending time with one another. As a very personal Christmas tradition, the DRESDEN-concept Welcome Center@TU Dresden asks German families to share the spirit of Christmas with international researchers: being a host, German families show researchers, their spouses, and even children how they celebrate this special holiday. Together they bake biscuits, enjoy mulled wine, sing Christmas carols, or visit a Christmas Market. In return, the researchers give them a glimpse into their own culture and tell them about their traditions or their special holidays, and maybe even surprise the hosts with some traditional dishes. And don’t be afraid of language barriers. The less both sides speak each other’s languages, the more you use hands and feet and the more funny it’ll be ;)

The invitations will take place between 9 and 27 December. And here’s how you can join:

As a researcher:

Write a short e-mail to us, so we know if you’re a single person or a family looking for a host. Please tell us the following things:

  • Name and age of all interested family members
  • Your status (enrolled PhD student or guest researcher without student ID)
  • Your schedule (preferred dates, if you leave Germany for the holidays or can’t make it on certain dates)
  • The languages you speak and whether you prefer to visit your host together with other researchers
  • If applicable: If there are any allergies your hosts should be aware of (or special diets)

As a host:

Also write a short e-mail to us and let us know about these facts:

  • Name and age of all hosts in your household (e.g. if you have kids)
  • Your schedule (preferred dates, if you leave Germany for the holidays or can’t make it on certain dates)
  • The languages you speak and whether you prefer to host for one or more international researchers
  • If applicable: If there are any allergies your guests should be aware of (or special diets)
  • And in case there are allergies: Do you have pets?

Please send us an e-mail to welcome.center@tu-dresden.de (the latest until 1 December) and we’ll start the matching process as soon as possible. Please note that we can only offer a certain number of invitations and will do our best to make the matching process work.

Best wishes,

Your Welcome Center Team
