Immersing into the world of modern art – Weekend trip to Kassel

It’s raining cats and dogs. This is maybe the best description for the steady rain which happened to follow us throughout the whole trip in Kassel.  Even if “the rain could have been even stronger” – quoting one participant obviously always seeing half of the glass full and not empty – the weather was giving us a hard to time to follow the plans we had for our “summer trip” to Kassel last weekend. But since we are already in the mood of sayings: “We are not made out of sugar” and enjoyed our days regardless. Maybe it was […]

„Fischbrötchen“, hiking and the seaside!

Saturday, the 29 April, it was finally time for our big excursion to the seaside. Because of the long way we had to meet early. Really early. The bus was supposed to leave at 5.30 a.m. but it was 6 until everybody was ready to take off. It was taking only ten minutes until nearly everybody was asleep, some of us didn’t sleep at all in the night before. At around 12 noon we arrived at our youth hostel. It was beautifully situated right next to the beach so everybody was joking about going for a swim. But first of […]

FREEZING IN THE SUN: EXCURSION TO THURINGIA

Our trip to Thuringia started very early and unfortunately it was also pretty cold, but luckily for us the bus quickly arrived and we were able to warm ourselves up inside. While driving we admired the beautiful landscape full of hoarfrost glittering in the sun. As we arrived in Rudolstadt, a small city in Thuringia, we enjoyed a unique view about the city only disturbed by some strange rock music. It was from a big run that took place in the city as we would find out later. For us it was time to discover the impressive baroque rooms inside […]

Impressions of a Day Trip: Freiberg and Seiffen

Last week, a group of researchers met in the early hours of the morning for what would be a full day of tourism in Freiberg and Seiffen, two cities which are not too far from Dresden. The fun began when we met our guide and our driver who happened to be very enthusiastic people. The day was pretty cold, so much so that if hadn’t it been for our guide’s joy and radiation we all would have probably just slept throughout the whole bus trip to Freiberg. Luckily, we barely noticed the bad weather outside, as we were amused by […]

Wandering through Magic City

“You take delight not in a city’s seven or seventy wonders, but in the answer it gives to a question of yours.” – Italo Calvino Weather gets colder every day, jackets thicker. So we decided not to torture you ones more with an excursion outside in the cold and went to discover the most extraordinary exhibition in town at the moment. Magic City is an artistic place built up in the industrial area and gave us the chance to see Street Art in all its aspects. Our guide, clearly one of the more original characters living in the area “Neustadt”, […]

Why does it always rain on us?
Report on excursion to beautiful Saale & Unstrut

Our trip to the Saale-Unstrut region started with bad weather. Again. We were afraid that our big plans for hiking to castles and walking through Naumburg would be stopped by the rain once more—those of you who participated in the wine hiking and tasting in Radebeul will know what I am talking about! But worrying too early is never a good idea. So we waited for our bus, driven by Klaus, who was always there when we needed him—more on that later. The ride to Naumburg was pretty quiet because everybody tried to catch up some sleep from the relatively […]

Bones, Buuz & Booze
Cosy evening in Mongolian jurt

How far do you need to travel to enjoy traditional Mongolian food in a jurt? You could travel to Mongolia, of course – or you could visit Tschuka in her original Mongolian jurt in Tharandt. During our ride there and the short walk to the jurt, the rainy weather didn’t stop our excitement for the evening and in the end, the sound of rain pouring down on the roof of the jurt made everything even cozier. The warm welcome of Tschuka and Bayartaa, a guest researcher from Mongolia working in Tharandt, included a ritual that would bring luck to the  […]

Budyšin, Budyšyn, Budyšín, Budziszyn or Bautzen?
Report on weekend excursion

For the second time now, the TUD Welcome Center and international researchers from Dresden visited the charming town on the river Spree, Bautzen. This ancient hill-top town that is more than 1000 years old has much to offer. Our intense 10-hour excursion started in the morning with a visit of the Sorbian museum, the Sebrski Muzej. The Sorbian people are a very tiny minority from Slavic descent with a rich and distinctive culture situated in the east German territory commonly called Lusatia. Mr. Brützke, having Sorbian roots himself, guided us through the very modern and well-curated exhibition, which informed about […]

Excursion report
Wernigerode & “the Harz Mountains”

Our trip last weekend took us into the Harz Mountains to the small town of Wernigerode. Friday evening, we took the train from Dresden into the forest area around the “Brocken” (the highest mountain in Northern Germany) and arrived late in the evening in Wernigerode. After a good sleep at the Harz Hostel we were full of energy and ready to start our hike towards the summit of Brocken, which lies 1142 m above sea level, on Saturday morning. We set off in the charming village Schierke and passed various forests, the rails of the traditional steam train and idyllic […]

Excursion to Munich – it was not just about beer and cars

The leafs still are green but you could feel that the summer in Dresden was almost over. So there is just one thing one could do: HEAD SOUTH. Last Friday fourteen researchers from all over the world took a train that had its last stop in Munich – the city of prezels, beer and leather trousers. And yes it’s true: The prezels were delicious, beer is served everywhere and ice-cold and the leather trousers? Yes, they actually wear them. Still there is so much more to see and experience. After a long train ride we finally arrived in the middle […]
