Thursday, 11 August 2016: The Zöllner 5 (Jazz concert)

Dirk Zöllner has been around for a long time in the German music community. He started off in the middle of the 1980s in Berlin. His music is influenced by the American Funk and Soul movement as well as by eastern German Ballads. He, as a person as well as his music, is unique and remarkable in its very own way. He can be seen as the godfather to an entire musical generation, always looking for new ways of expressions and still he doesn’t follow every new trend. Being on the road for more than 23 years, he brings not only great music but also lots of wisdom packed in his lyrics.

Friday, 12 August 2016: Ostrale’16 – KOSMOS Imagination in 360° (dance performance)

The sounds of heaven. The blue of the harps. Movement view. The broad closeness in an artificial cosmos. The installation invites the visitor to float between those contraries. Everyone is covered by the big tent and still … some move on.

Saturday, 13 August 2016: Kinderfest on the main street (event for the whole family)

This Saturday, the main street from Goldener Reiter to Albertplatz invites all children and their families on a road full of tinkering, drawing, games and sports. The big children’s festival will make their hearts beat faster. There will even be some face painting and lots more promising a lot of fun during the whole afternoon.

Saturday, 13 August 2016: Manina & friends (concert to dance and relax)

The band originally from Dresden consists of the singer Manina Heim and her friends. They play songs to fall in love, dance and swing along. On the point, heart-warming and cool pop song covers create a package for those who want to listen and those who want to dance. This time they play outside in the summer lounge of Saloppe, the place to rest and stay, to dream and discover the beauty of Now.

Sunday, 14 August 2016: The Guitarreros (guitar concert)

The audience at concerts of The Guitarreros is always impressed in two ways: The high quality of the music and the joyful performance of Flamenco-Nuevo, Samba and Bossa Nova  is presented by the twin duo Volker and Torsten Schubert. This time they will bring their first own record ‘Colorido’. The theme of the CD is based on the colors of Spain, Brazil and India and the picture of the summer in those countries. So let them guide you to those exotic places and enjoy a great evening.

Tuesday, 16 August 2016: Genius (movie in original version)

When, one day of 1929, writer Thomas Wolfe, decided to keep the appointment made by Max Perkins, editor at Scribner’s, he had no illusions: his manuscript would be turned down as had invariably been the case. But, to his happy amazement, his novel, which was to become ‘Look Homeward, Angel’, was accepted for publication. The only trouble was that it was overlong (5,000 pages) and had to be reduced. Although reluctant to see his poetic prose trimmed, Wolfe agreed and helped by Perkins, who had become a true friend, managed to cut 90,000 words from the book, with the result that it instantly became a favorite with the critics and best seller. Success was even greater in 1935 when ‘Of Time end the River’ appeared, but the fight for reducing Wolfe’s logorrheic written expression had been even longer (over two years) and bitter ultimately taking its toll, the relationships between the two men gradually deteriorating. Wolfe did not feel grateful to Perkins any longer but had started …

Wednesday, 17 August: Movie night at the river side (Welcome Center event)

As a very typical cultural highlight of the summer in Dresden, we would like to go with you to the movie nights at the riverside of Elbe, the so called “Filmnächte. Therefore, we have chosen the movie ‘Colonia Dignidad’, which talks about the gloomy part of the German- Chilean relations from the view of a young couple. The movie will be shown at 17 August 2016, 9 p.m. Story Line: Lena and Daniel, a young couple become entangled in the Chilean military coup of 1973. Daniel is abducted by Pinochet’s secret police and Lena tracks him to a sealed off area in the South of the country, called Colonia Dignidad. The Colonia presents itself as a charitable mission run by lay preacher Paul Schäfer but, in fact, is a place nobody ever escaped from. Lena decides to join the cult in order to find Daniel. Based on true events. Please register everybody via welcome.center@tu-dresden.de. The first 10 will get free tickets!!! A normal ticket is about 8 €.
