Sunday, 10 December: Bustour to the X-Mas Wonderland (PhD & PostDocs only)

Last year’s Christmas excursion was such a success, that we’re very happy to announce it again! In an exciting bus tour to the Ore Mountains, we’ll introduce you to the origin of several local Christmas traditions. We’ll be driving by bus from Dresden to Freiberg, where 800 years of mining has left its traces and we’ll start with going underground. In an exclusive guided tour through the mine „Reiche Zeche“, you’ll get an idea of where a huge part of the Ore Mountain’s population worked not too long ago. That’s also the origin of the famous “Schwibbogen”. The light on that wooden bow, often located on the windowsill, which guided the workers back home in the darker seasons, now is a famous souvenir and beloved Christmas decoration all over the world. After a stop at the Christmas market in Seiffen – where you can buy souvenirs and snacks as well (maybe the famous cake Christmas Stollen?) – we’ll have a more detailed look at how the wooden figurines and decorations are made. In the Christmas workshop “Eva Beyer” you can see live how traditional “Räuchermänner” (smoking manikins) are made. So to anyone who couldn’t join us last year – or maybe wants to join again? – this is your final opportunity to catch a glimpse of local Christmas traditions!! Registration and payment must be made until tomorrow, Friday the 9 of December, so be quick!

Beginning: 8 a.m.; Admission: 15 EUR
