Thursday, 21 December: Lotta Sleeps & No King. No Crown. (Concert)

Low on cash but you still want to go out and enjoy some good live music? Not a problem! Tonight, two bands, “Lotta Sleeps” and “No King. No Crown.” Will be performing at Dresden’s Hole of Fame on a donation based admission! “Lotta Sleeps” is a band with five members playing a variety of instruments, ranging from the regular acoustic guitar, bass and drums, to the violin, trumpet and mandolin. Their musical style is a mixture of folk with post-rock, indie pop, as well as a pinch of jazz tones. “No King. No Crown.” on the other hand is a one-man band. René Ahlig, however, gives his viewers the feeling of listening to an entire band, performing with his guitar as well as the banjo, synthesizer, drums, as well as his own voice, of course.

December: Blade Runner 2049

In case you still haven’t seen this year’s remake of this science fiction classic, you still have the chance this Friday! The movie arrives 35 years after the iconic original was released and features the story of Officer K, played by Ryan Gosling, as a new blade runner in the Los Angeles Police department, who unearths a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos. His discovery leads him on a quest to find the original Blade Runner Rick Deckard, once more played by Harrison Ford, who in the film is portrayed as a former blade runner who has been missing for 30 years. Mixing new characters with the old and well-known originals, do not miss your chance to miss this 2017 blockbuster!

Saturday, 23 December: Art and Antique Flea Market in the Markthalle

A day before Christmas Eve, this is your last chance to visit this small market inside the Markthalle on the Neustadt’s main pedestrian street. In case you have never been to the Markthalle, the 115 year old building alone is already worth a visit due to its beautiful architectural style. Inside, you will find a market filled with hand crafted goods, beautiful pieces of art as well as other antique items, as one would normally find in a flea market. The organizers of the event forbid any sort of food or cheap modern Chinese items to be sold, so if you are looking for something authentic to give as a gift this Christmas, this is the place for you!

Sunday, 24 December: Santa Claus Lands in Dresden!

Every year Santa Claus comes to town on Christmas Eve’s morning in Dresden! Aboard the Christmas Air flight DRS 2412 filled with gifts, jolly old saint Nick lands in our city to fulfill children’s wishes. If you or any of your friends have any kids, this is an event that will make them glow with happiness, as Santa disembarks and waves to the children watching from the viewing platform. Once in the terminal building, Santa then proceeds to hand out all of the gifts he brought along with him to the children awaiting! There is also a full program of games, songs, and lots of fun to ensure that every child has a great time! If you are interested in attending, make sure to pick up a free ticket at the airport’s info-stand prior to the 24, as due to the high number of visitors, entry will only be allowed to those with a ticket.

Monday, 25 December: Christmas Buffet 2017

Finally it’s Christmas but you just realized no one really wants to cook on this holiday? Not a problem, as you have the chance to celebrate with class in one of Dresden’s most beautiful hotels, the Westin Bellevue! This is obviously not the only event on Christmas day offering delicious food, a quick search for “Weihnachtsbrunch” will lead you to an array of events spread out throughout different restaurants in the city. At the Bellevue the holiday buffet is accompanied by a glas of champagne as well as live piano music. If you are interested in attending, be sure to make a reservation in advance, as events like this are often overbooked on Christmas day.

Tuesday, 26 December: Der Strom (DEREVO Dance Company Dresden–St. Peterburg)

As described by the Hellerau website, “Der Strom” (The Flow) is about movement, changing places, arriving somewhere, refuge and nest-building, as well as moving on, migration and pity, renewal, change, and life. “In the current situation of globalisation, which has long been inevitably bringing people together closely, not just in Europe but all over the world, these topics are all more relevant than ever. And they raise questions. In its new production, the DEREVO dance theatre, which originates in Russia, deals with these subjects, drawing on the biographies of its protagonists as travellers between East and West and as links between Petersburg and Dresden. Through the poetry of visual images, expressed by dance and movement.” If you cannot make it for the premiere on Tuesday, there will also be presentations on Wednesday and Thursday.

Wednesday, 27 December: ArtMasters Paint Party

Enjoy a creative evening with ArtMasters at the Meteora restaurant on Wednesday! Anyone is welcome to join, even those with no knowledge whatsoever about art or painting techniques. At the restaurant, your teacher, Anna, will show you step by step how to paint a beautiful lavender field on a 40×50 cm canvas. At the end, you may take your painting home and brag to your friends about how well you can paint! All necessary materials will be present and are already included in the entrance ticket. In case you need something to eat or drink throughout the event, food and drinks may be purchased for the restaurant’s regular prices. If you decide to come as a group, be sure to arrive early, so that you may all find places near each other.
