The street artists César Olhagaray und Ralf Menzel created this exhibition to illustrate the live of artists during the time of the GDR regime. The conditions for artists in this socialist state were very clear. In exchange for a monthly salary, their own artist’s freedom was only legit in the frame of the so-called socialist realism. But only if you were a member of the artistic guild. And as the board was very close to the regime and its leaders, you had to obey to the rules. If not, your prospects as an artist in the GDR were very limited. César Olhagaray und Ralf Menzel talk about their own experiences showing scripts, drawings, footage and photos.
